We are interested in hearing about your experiences. The results will be summarized and shared with the administration. Their action/inaction will then be shared with you. This process will continue until all parties are satisfied with bookstore operation.
1. Fraudulent practices: Packaging used books ($15 value) as new and charging $115 or more. When students open the package and find writing or highlighting, they return to the bookstore and are accused of defacing the book themselves. No refunds or at best $15. The bookstore keeps the $100.
2. Students do not pick their books off the shelf. They are selected by bookstore staff. When a student is sold the wrong book and attempts to return it, they may be offered the used book price or not be able to return it at all.
3. Whole classes have been sold the wrong book and even with faculty and/or the appropriate academic Dean involved, the bookstore would not accept responsibility, replace the books, or refund any money to the affected students.
Please share your experiences. We need them if changes are to be made. ( Action will only be taken if it can be demonstrated that we are not talking about a few isolated cases.)

I am a current student at MCC. I purchased books for the fall semester. A Business management book for over $145.00 new. I kept the book in like new condition with the hope that I could get a good price when I sold it back to the book store after the semester. Upon returning the book I was offered $35.00. I didn't have gas or lunch money a problem that is faced by many of us here at Mott College; so I sold the book to fill the need for gas and food. Just before winter semester started I again stopped at the bookstore to purchase my books. As I went down the business aisle, I noticed a copy of the business book that I had previously purchased. I ask the bookstore worker the price of the book, I was told that the price of a used copy of the book was $125.00. I felt disgusted as if I were taken advantage of. How can this College allow its students to be taken advantage of in this way? Who gains from this abuse of students? What can we do to stop it?
I know the pain and anguish about the bookstore and I in no way condone what they do. Being a staff member here at Mott, I will say this, the bookstore is no longer run by Mott. The bookstore is ran by Efollett. They are just on Mott's campus. After reading the blog I am responding to, I had decided to some questioning about the situation and turned up this piece of info. They are lumping their pricing techniques based upon the financial aid students. They do not care that some students are buying their books out of their own pockets. They thinking is that they do not want to give the financial aid students back a lot of money when the students sell their books back. So, they are lumping all the students in the same category. I know that is wrong but that is their tactic. However, if you get enough students together who have the same stance you have, you can change this. Remember, there is strength in numbers.
Is there any way that we can get the ISBN numbers posted for our books a couple of weeks prior to the start of classes? This would give us time to order books from other venues such as Amazon.com or Alibris.com. The prices are much better. Is there a list that we can get from a book distributor? or our book store?
I find it interesting that Mott "Bookstore is no longer run by Mott". When I wanted to make a formal complaint about the manager of the store I was told to talk to someone at Mott Community College? So If Mottis not running the show then why did the manager give me a number to contact Mott and not Efollett? Very Interesting...
